Main event to High Flyer

High Flyer, ridden by Mrs Jane Knox (Kaikoura), lived up to his name, when, with some brilliant jumping he deservedly won the Rothmans Pall Mall Labour Day championship jump at Rangiora yesterday from the form horses Mighty Tarn, ridden by Mrs Annette McCully and Juanita Banana, ridden by Mrs Diana Bain.

It was bad luck for the Junior New Zealand Horse Society (Canterbury area) committee and the Rangiora District Jaycees that their jumping show and carnival was marred by bad weather. Gate-takings were well down.

Side-show alley was also a sorry sight with the amusement area surrounded by water.

In spite of the extremely wet ground conditions and rain, the jumping on the whole was of a high standard. The courses proved to be well planned by Miss Mary Carmichael. Three horses—High Flyer. [Ringo (Miss V. Willisl, and Mightv Tarn—were all clear until the last jump of the testing course of 13 numbered jumps, which included a double and a

treble. Juanita Banana bad four faults at fence nine. Fences were raised for the first jump-off. and once again High Flyer and Mighty Tarn were equal, both faulting again at the last jump. The pressure was really on for these two horses and riders. First to go, High Flyer, with some brilliant jumping, produced the first clear round in the event in 46.25ec. Mighty Tarn, which had earlier won the Gamblers Stakes, in trying hard to better High Flyer’s time, pulled a rail, and his rider Mrs McCully, retired from the jump-off as these horses had had a strenuous weekend’s jumping.,. SMALLEST PONY ! The South Island Juvenile i Championship resulted in a victory for the smallest pony in the event, the well-performed Gay Prince and the youngest rider. Jane Wightman from Rangiora. Gay Prince, which had four faults in the first round, run under table A, excelled in the second round when he scorched 'round the twisting speed course

to record the fastest time to; win the event with a total of 43.4. Close behind was the 1973; winner. Ringo, which this year was capably ridden by Vicki I Willis (Christchurch), scoring! 45.2. Third place went to; another Rangiora entry, E’en Do, 1 ridden by Roddy Wood, which! had an excellent time, but in; dropping the first rail had I another Bsec added to his time, | to finish with 49.4. It was a rewarding trip fori the Gore rider, L. Hammond.! who was placed first and third with his novice horse Nocte. Results:— HORSES ' C grade one round table A: (Miss M. Taylor’s Warratah I.
