HAMILTON, Oct. 27.
A mobile army kitchen from Papakura was sent to the Waikeria - Detention Centre, south of Te Awamutu, this afternoon, to replace a kitchen which was [gutted .by fire early today. The centre would feed ’about 350 people from the mobile kitchen until the bumt-out main kitchen block was repaired, Superintendent L. B. Harder said. Kitchen facilities at one of the villas were used to feed the inmates today.
Te Awamutu firemen wearing breathing apparatus spent two hours fighting the blaze. Thick smoke prevented the centre’s firemen from getting close to the fire. Inmates from the central and east blocks were taken to the gymnasium for more than an hour.
