The Hollywood songwriter, Johnnv Mercer, who wrote among other songs “Laura ' and "That Old Black Magic, ’’ is in a critical cc dition in a : Los Angeles hospital, after surgery for the removal of a I brain tumour. Mr Mercer, I who is 66 and began his scarcer in the 1930 s as both (composer and lyricist, wrote Tour Academy Award-winning I songs, "Atchison, Topeka and '.Santa Fe.” “In the Cool. Cool, Cool of the Evening." {“Moon River,” and “Days of i Wine and Roses." Among his .other noted hits were: “Lazvbones,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Tangerine,” and "You Were Never Lovelier” — the last in collaboration with Jerome Kern.—Los Angeles.
