Fencing of pools ‘emotional’
An open forum, at which all aspects of lifesaving work were discussed, and a “workshop” session at a Christchurch pool, were side-features of the sixtysecond annual meeting and conference of the Royal Lifesaving Society of New Zealand at the week-end. The workshop was an opportunity for the proposed amendments to some of the society’s awards to be demonstrated to the 60 in attendance. The executive officer of the society (Mr J. C. Hughes) said the highlights of the season were the gaining of 29,173 awards by young people throughout the country, and the introduction of paid part-time instructors teaching in schools. “The society hopes that lifesaving may soon become part of school curricula,” said Mr Hughes. The society was concerned about "emotional outbursts for the fencing of private pools,” said the president (Mr S. E. Nicol), "when in fact many more of the same age are drowned in inland waters. We, as a society, emphasise the need for responsible supervision by parents.”
