‘Open’ talks opposed
' (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Opposition in Parliament on Friday opposed a provision in the Public Bodies Amendment Bill which opens committees of public bodies to the public. During the second reading debate Mr A. A. McCready (Nat., Manawatu) said the provision would lead to a considerable increase in the cost of local bodies, add to the work load, stifle open discussion reduce the c.on- ■ fidentiality of discussion, encourage unofficial meetings of standing; committees and reduce the] real value of reports of committees. Committees were the place where the real work was done, and where discussion could be held that could not be held in public, he said. Accordingly, the Opposition would move an amendment in the committee stages of the bill which would remove this position. Mr K. R. Allen (Nat., Tauranga) said the provision seemed to be a vote of no confidence in the elected representatives of the people.
