Wrestler’s success
The Canterbury’ amateur wrestler, Bruce McMahon, gained a notable double success during the national championships, which ended at Rotorua on Saturday evening. McMahon won back the 52kg title that he had not defended 12 months ago, and was the only South Islander chosen in the New Zealand team to tour Australia next month. Otherwise, the tournament was dominated by Waikato representatives. The province scored most points in the senior and junior sections, and Brian Oldridge was judged to be the most scientific wrestler. The junior award went to T. Green (Auckland). The other members of the New Zealand team are W. Fitzgerald (Auckland. 48kg), Green (48kg), Oldridge (57kg), P. Dailey (Waikato, 62kg), A. Roche (Waikato, 68kg), W. Le Haarve (Waikato, 74kg), D. A. Aspin (Auckland, 82kg), N. Sargent (Wairarapa, 90kg), and M Avery (Auckland, 100 kg). Apart from the juniors, Fitzgerald and Green, they were the winners of their respective divisions. Murrav Allen (Canterbury’) was the runner-up to Le Haarve, while two Canterbury entrants, M. Neville and J. Woudberg, were the minor place-setters behind P. Sargent (Wairai rapa) in the junior 90kg class.
