Amin called ‘racist murderer’

America’s United Nations Ambassador, Mr Daniel Moynihan, has called President Idi Amin of Uganda a “racist murderer” and voiced the hope that other African leaders would repudiate him. Mr Moynihan, who assumed his post after advocating an aggressive defence of United States interests against Third World attacks, made his remarks in a speech to the A.F.L.-C.LO. labour confederation’s national convention last night. He said that the two dozen democracies remaining among the 142 United Nations members were coming under increasing attack from “totalitarian and Communistic regimes and assorted ancient and modem despotisms” which are convinced their success depends on democracy’s failure. “It is no accident that on

Wednesday, if I may use his United Nations title, His Excellency, Field Marshal Air Hoji Idi Amin Dada, President of the Republic of Uganda, called ... for the extinction of Israel as a State,” Mr Moynihan said. “And it is .no accident, I fear, that this racist murderer, as one of our leading newspapers called him this morning, is the head of the Organisation of African Unity, for Israel is a democracy and it is simply the fact that despotisms will seek whatever opportunities come to hand to destroy that which threatens them most, which is democracy.” Mr Moynihan noted that the United States was fighting a resolution now before the world body equating Zionism with racism and calling for the eradication of both. He called the resolution “an outrage” but predicted that it would pass. Nevertheless, he said that he hoped that members of the Organisation of African Unity, which the Ugandan leader heads this year, "will disavow Amin and all he stands for.”
