Former P.M. of France dead
(N.Z P A -Reuter—Copyright> PARIS, October 3. Mr Guy Mollet, a former French Prime Minister who ordered French conscripts into the Algerian war of independence and joined Britain in the 1956 Suez invasion, has died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 69. A leading member of the French Socialist Party, Mr Mollet was Prime Minister during the latter days of the p ourth Republic. His decision to order conscripts into battle against the Algerian nationalists led to an extension of the conflict in the then French territory and split France.
The battle with the nationalists developed into a major war directly responsible for the fall of the Fourth Republic and the return to power of General Charles de Gaulle. Mollet rallied to General de Gaulle and served as a Minister of State in his Government.
