Club skilled at raising funds
The Zonta Club of Christchurch is making a name for itself as an organisation adept at coaxing money out of people to give to good ; causes. It was the second club in the history of Zonta International to raise the full 1 amount, $3OOO, for an Amelia Earhart Scholarship, and won praise for this from; the president of Zonta International at an Australasia conference in Perth, last: month. The Amelia Earhart Schol-i arship is an award for sci-' ence graduates to allow; them to study advanced: aerospace sciences.
Mrs Lorna Speary, president of the Christchurch club, said the international president had commended it on its “quite unique" effort. It was the first time the club, which was formed four years ago. had attended a district conference. It was decided at the conference that a project to: raise $lO,OOO for Pan African Women’s Aid, to educate;
African women, should be undertaken before June next year. Mrs Speary said $4OOO — had already been donated but that all the clubs in the district would now raise ; funds to make up the full amount or more. Among their fund-raising activities, the Christchurch club is planning to hold an exhibition of art and crafts, as many of its members are skilled in the creative arts. Mrs Speary said that she; did not think the target* would be too difficult to reach and that the Christchurch club’s contribution* would be “no bother at all.” |
