Cricket Council targets
“A complete set of indoor pitches throughout New Zealand,” and an endeavour to have a fully representative international programme, are major targets of the New Zealand Cricket Council. The chairman of the council’s board of control (Mr W. A. Hadlee) specifically mentioned these two points at the annual meeting of the council last evening. Mr Hadlee also expressed the hope that the Plunket Shield would be competed
tor regularly in a North Island v. South Island match: — although he confessed to 1 running a risk of being at variance with other boardi members. He also reported that a meeting of international cricketing nations had agreed that the rest dav in a test match could be used to replace a day rained off, unless lit was the first day of a test. The expected challenge to jthe Christchurch-based executive of the board of control did not eventuate. Mr R. A. Vance (Wellington) announced his unavailability — for business reasons — before the ballot, and Messrs W. A. Hadlee, C. F.
Collins, and G. T. Dowling were declared elected. Officers elected were:— Patron, Sir Denis Blundell, president, Mr A. K Ibbetson, treasurer, Mr J C. Saunders. North Island minor associations delegate, Mr B A. Hosklng, South Island minor associations delegate, Mr A. F. Wright Mr K. L. Sandford, a long time North Island Minor Aaso ciations’ representative on the board .and a past president, was elected a life member. | Mr Sandford war, the longest I serving member of the board at [his retirement. Mr A. J. Postles. the chairman I of the national coaching committee, mentioned the likelihood Of I the Rothmans Sports Foundation ■ withdrawing Its support from [the national coach scheme. In that eventuality, said Mr Postles, “let us make sure Martin Horton is engaged for many more years yet a* our •national coach.’’
