Progress League

Sir, — Councillor D. F. i Caygill is reported as saying, at a City Council cultural committee meeting, that the Canterbury Progress League “wasted its time on a lot of nonsense.” While allowing for journalistic selection from Mr Caygill’s comments, this is still an unfair indictment. During my period in the league, representations have been made on various important issues, from the use of Maui gas to irrigation in Canterbury and the problem of thar in the high country. There are two active committees which discuss such matters, the irritation, forestry and land development committee and the recently formed environment committee. Our environment committee is now discussing, for example, the master transportation plan review, with a view to submissions for the league's consideration. Finally, it should be remembered that the league’s grants from local bodies are used mainly to staff and administer the Public Relations Office, a relatively small proportion servicing the league itself. — Yours, etc., HELEN HERVEY.
