Girls convicted of murder

Sir, —I appreciated Hilhorst’s cartoon which wrung the last irony from the oil price situation on your front page today but I felt the naming prominently of the high school of a girl convicted of murder in Sydney threw no light on the circumstances which surrounded this tragedy. Perhaps the intention was to highlight the fact that this exploited unfortunate was recently at school in Christchurch. If so, your subeditor could have corrected John Drew’s lack of taste by words suitable to that purpose.—Yours, etc.. SLUR BY ASSOCIATION. October 1, 1975.

Sir, —For how long has “The Press” been running a gossip column? John Drew’s report on the Paintin and Garrett girls was virtually just that. There was only one piece of information that was any business of the public. That was. that the proprietor of the “Pink Pussycat” can exploit a 16-year-old girl to satisfy his salacious customers.—Yours, etc., JUST A MOTHER. October 1, 1975.
