Beau Trie — second time lucky?

In Beau Trie the Riccar- . ton trainer, Kelvin Quayle, j has a horse fit to show a return to his best form — provided the chestnut gets a firm track to suit. Last week Beau Trie was accepted for in the feature race at Trentham, but the trip was cancelled on a report from a Wellingtonian of rain in the area. As it turned out Trentham dodged the rain experienced in Wellington city, and they raced on a firm track.

This week Beau Trie’s connections have hopes of a start in the Otago Racing Club’s Grandstand Handicap, - and the horse will be taken south this morning if there is a reasonable chance of a good

track at Wingatui tomorrow. With his trainer up. Beau Trie galloped 1400 m on the plough at Riccarton yesterday. He recorded Imin 32sec for the distance, and a sharp 36.65ec for the final 600 in. The plough gave good footing, and it was also chosen for the stablemates Ribaldo and Cappello, which are also Wingatui-bound. After starting from the 1200 m, Cappello took a short lead coming to the straight, but Kevin Morton shook Ribaldo up near the end for this combination to draw level. They were home from the 1200 m in Imin 16.4 sec, and from the 600 m in 37sec. Ribaldo looks as if he has thrived since his third in the Geraldine Cup, and should give the best of his younger rivals plenty to do at the end of 2200 m in the Grandstand Handicap. Cappello, an improving third at Ashburton last time out, is being taken south for the Visitors Handicap. 11.45 a.m.— WAKARI BRUSH HURDLES $1450; 2400 m. 1 121 Foreign Aid (10) 63.5 B. 2.15 p.m.— GRANDSTAND HANDICAP $2100; 2200 m. T 021 DANDYMAN (12) 57 (5 h Gate Keeper—Fine and Dandy, J. D. Pankhurst, Wingatui). Narrow win in metric mile on first day. Big task here under 57kg but has the class to improve a sound record on his home course. J. Pankhurst 2 588 BEAU TRIC (5) 54.5 (5 h Trictrac—Last Dip, K. W. Quayle, Riccarton). Weak showing when switched back to middle distance racing in Geraldine Cup. Has been working well but race form has been a bit disappointing. R. McCann 3 2222 WINDVALE (11) 54.5 (5 g Mellay—Graewyn, C. T. Stewart, Washdyke). Might have won on first day but for hanging in on more than one occasion in the run home. Beaten a nose by Dandyman last Saturday and at difference in weight this time must go hard again. W. Berry 4 349 REDLO (3) 54 (8 g Kurdistan—Cadillac. E. A. Winsloe, Gore). Weak showing in Geraldine Cup but earlier form was fairly sound. Getting on in years but could still get into the finish if the ground remains soft E. Winsloe 5 6 BETTYLYN (13) 53.5 (7 m Kurdistan—Cadillac, B. T. Jones, Washdyke) Sixth in Geraldine Cup was encouraging start to a fresh campaign. Struck solid patch of winning form in the spring of last year and might not be long reaching peak again. L. Molloy

6 003 RIBALDO (7) 53.5 (9 g Ribotlight—Fleur, C. L. Austin, Riccarton). Former top stayer which showed something like his true form . again when a fast-finishing third in the Geraldine Cup. Looks big chance here if he gets reasonable footing. K. Morton 7 1 SHOW KEEPER (8) 53.5 (5 g Gate Keeper—Minglow, G. B. Thomson, Mosgiel). Could not have been more impressive than at his last start when he led all the way to win the Ashburton Cup at his first attempt for season. Will be hardest to beat if that run has not left its mark. C. Ramage 8 0 HOWGAME (4) 53 (6 g Hawa—Game Girl, W. F. Ellis Invercargill). Looked badly in need of race when he began fresh campaign in middle distance event at Gore late last month. Should be improved by run but might need another yet. 9 4455 MONTANA GIRL (4) 53 (4 m Montecello—Montana, A. Gower, Invercargill.) Came from last to finish fifth in feature stakes event at Orari last Monday week. Usually runs her races out strongly and this distance should be to her liking B. Laking 10 4004 ANITA KAY (14) 52 (5 m Mellay—Magic Casement, C. S. Reece-Jones, Wingatui). Pretty useful on her day but has yet to find form on her present campaign. Fair sixth on first day and might be improving. G. Heaton 11 1970 BENNELONG (10) 52 <5 h Lomond—Daimain, R. T. Harris. Tuahiwi). Weak form background since winning class four metric mile at Grand National meeting. Faded to rear after pacemaking on first day. P. Thomas 12 0098 GOOD NIP (2) 52 (6 h Eastern Nip—Good Halyard, E. P. Corboy, Washdyke). Would have to Improve out of sight on anything lie has done lately to be a big danger but chance could Improve if going is heavy. M Batkin 13 9 HURRYBY (9) 52 (6 m Arctic Explorer—Mirene, W. Mee, Lauder). Beat one in metric mile on first day when making fresh start. Form all round not very encouraging. R. McAra 14 78 LEYLEIGH (2) 52 (7 m Mellay—Russleigh, B. P. Kennedy, Wingatui). Has failed

to make an impression in her two starts in a fresh campaign after being off the scene for more than a season. Should be improving but still hard to fancy. 2.50 p.m.— McLEAN STAKES, $1300; 800 m. 1 Barkley Boy (4) 53.0 L. Beckett 2 Bell Flight (10) 53.0 J. Dowling 5 Indian Arrow (1) 53.0 M. Winsloe, Gore), Has not raced Bince April verv ml«ht run this distance very well fresh up. w . . 2 035 UNLUCKY IN LOVE (D 54 (5 111 BdlbOrOUgh - Swanky, B. J. Anderton. Wliignliil). Best run on present campaign was distant third behind Zcbak at Riccarton in August. Speedy enough to keep up with moat In this field. I J 79 MACLANE (8) 54.5 (8 g Kurdistan- Flying Tltne, L. Stewart, Waahdyke). Has shown excellent form at times at ■ mile and beyond but hard to Imagine him making a winning bld at thia distance. 4 14 RED STUDENT (7) M.S I 1.3 g Royal Student Heddle. J. T». Pankhurst, Wingatui). Bold run for fourth after

missing start badly In sprint at Orari last Monday week. About as consistent as they

come and would have to be

included among top fancies. J. Pankhurst 5 000 HAGEN'S CLOUD (4) 54 (6 m Copenhagen II— Nimbus Cloud, B. T. Jones, Washdyke). Has not been racing within a stone of her best lately but has a good record on this course. Hard to fancy but is type which could cause an upset. L. Molloy 4 3155 WILLIAM BROWN (8) 54 (5 g Grey William—Fernhill, M. R. Jones, Washdyke). Not so good over the longer journeys but could make his presence fe.lt here. Fair effort for fifth among

metric-milers on first day. G. Mein 7 1441 EROS (5) S 3 (S R Greek God—llluminate, M. R. Jones, Washdyke). Hardly ever runs a poor race on this course. Open sprint 'winner on first day ana will be hard to beat again if the ground remains heavy.

K. Morton 8 5 AHJAY (15) 52.5 (9 g Better Honey—Ella, J. F. Waterworth, Rlcearton). Fair effort fresh-up for fifth in sprint at Orari last Monday week. Although getting into veteran stage still very capable on wet tracks. Might be the one to cause an upset. I. Grant 9 ZING (3) 52.5 (7 g Minuit— Aoudo, N. Patterson, Mataura). Comes up with the odd good run but might need this one. his first since January.

10 CORRANDULLA (10) 52 B (9*g Bourbon Prince—Sonare, W. Dryden, Waimate). Once very good sprinter but at stage now where vast improvement is hard to imagine. W. Berry 11 73 GATES AJAR (14) 52 (S g Gate Keeper—Subdual, G. B. Thomson, Mosgicl). lias the pace to be thereabouts all the way. Allowed to miss first day because of very heavy ground. Will- give the others plenty to do if the footing is reasonable.

M. Batkin 12 MY MELL AY (») 52 (8 h Mellay—Pride of Woodlands, Dennis Bros, Woodlands). Stayer making fresh start and at his age unlikely to match some of the swifter sprinters at this distance. 13 » NIGENT (12) 52 (9 g Resurgent—Dark Maid, H. T. Anderton, Wlngatul). Well beaten in metric-mile at Otago Hunt meeting early In month. Might have improved with that run but hard to fancy just the same. .. C. Sanderson 14 2272 TE PANGO NUI (13) 52 (4 h Greek God—Carlton, It. T. Harris, Tuahlwi). One of ■ obvious choices after close second to Eros In sprint on first day. Very capable on soft or easy tracks.

M. Thornley 15 70 TAKE YOUR LEAVE (4) 52 (4 h Gate Keeper, Subdual, G. B. Thomson, Mosgiel). Has plenty of pace but has not been running bls races out solidly. Distance will be to his liking but could not be recommended with confidence.
