Petrol

Sir, — Whatever inconveniences are involved we should all be 100 per cent behind our Government in the various measures it could adopt to meet the present oil crisis. These measures could include petrol rationing, cheaper and more attractive public transport, restrictions on the use of petrol for power, heating, ! pleasure craft, etc, increas- . ing use of coal, water , power, windmills and nuclear energy. For a long time now I have been dismayed that governments and oil companies have not given our top scientists maximum encouragement to develop alternative motor fuels. As for another increase in the price of petrol, Mr Tizard should bear in mind his recent unnecessarily savage increase of 21 cents a gallon and Mr Freer should recollect how he allowed prices to escalate for over a year before he did anything about it and consider that 26in colour TV sets still sell at around SNZSOO overseas. — Yours, i etc., OLYMPUS. September 30, 1975. Sir, — Because of the cer- ' tainty of another petrol : price rise I think the Christ- . church Transport Board’s : Sunday family ticket should 1 be widely advertised. You can do two trips in, and two ■ trips out of town for two ■ adults and up to four child- ■ ren, or one adult and five ’ children, for only 60 cents. We did a trip to Lyttelton . and found another saving: • your ticket even saves the , tunnel toll. —Yours, etc., J. EDWARDS. ' September, 29, 1975.
