Plantation will be closed
The North Canterbury Catchment Board will dose Its McLeans Island plantation and surrounding riverbed land to the public this summer. The board is concerned about public safety in view of the expected high fire risk and the danger from thousands of leaning trees. The plantation, covering about 1500 acres, was devastated during the storm on August 1. Almost all of it is in ruins, several million cubic feet of timber lying on the ground. The board fears that a fire started accidentally by picnickers or other visitors to the plantation would ruin fallen but savable timber. FOUR AREAS The board’s reserves administrator (Mr A. C. Norton) yesterday urged the reserves committee to recommend that the board close the plantation. The committee will obtain board approval to exclude the public from four specified areas which are accessible from: upstream of the termination of Willows Road at McLeans Island; McLeans crossbank, on the northern or river-side of McLeans Island; the Weedons-Ross Road; the track adjacent to the north-west corner of the West Melton rifle range.
