Miss Low wraps up golf win

' (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER. A 20-year-old Invercargill public servant. Robyn Low, wrapped up the national women's match-play golf championship at the Napier Waiohiki course yesterday when she had a great three-hole run on the back nine of the last round to beat Elizabeth Douglas, also of Invercargill, three and one. When Miss Low sent in what turned out to be the winning shot she turned her head away, unable to look. At this stage, Mrs Douglas was in the bunker. “I was scared to look to see where my ball went on the 16th (in the second round),” she said. “Then, I could hardly believe my eyes. I was only five feet away—and in a great position.

“I just can’t believe I have won the championship,” Miss Low said. Miss Low proved herself a giant-killer in earlier rounds when she beat Mrs S. Bunt (Titirangi), Mrs Jean Whitehead, a former national titleholder, and Mrs Sue Bishop, a member of the New Zealand Tasman Cup team. Most thought Miss Low was very lucky to get through to the final, and she was given very little chance of victory, because Mrs Douglas is a polished performer. After the first 18 holes in the morning she was ahead by two strokes, having played some good and consistent golf. She could have been even further ahead had she not missed two easy 10-foot putts.

Miss Low thought she might have blown her chances when she played a disastrous 31st hole.

Her tee-shot hit a big pine on the right of the fairway and stopped 10 feet from the trunk. Miss Low shanked her shot back into the tree and eventually reached the green in four and lost the hole. Throughout the final Miss Low played more consistent golf, although when square at the 27th it appeared she was playing safe, instead of putting to win. Anne McHardy (Hastings) fought back magnificently to beat Daisy Seiringer (Manor Park) at the 20th and win the New Zealand Plate.

Tennis. — Chile eliminated fourth-seeded West Germany in the SUSIOO.OOO Nations Cup tennis tournament in Kingston, Jamaica.
