New speed record
(N .Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) UTAH. An American broke the world motor-cycle speed record and became the first man to shatter the 300 miles an hour barrier. Don Vesco, a 36-year-old motor-cycle dealer, overcame wind gusts across his course to average 302.928 miles an hour for two runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats, west of Salt Lake City. Vesco made a third run which, averaged with the faster of his previous two, gave him a United States speed of 303.812 miles an hour. During one of the three runs he was timed at a peak of 307.692 miles an hour, believed to be the highest speed reached by any motor-cyclist.
