Commotion in court
(N.Z.P. A. Reuter—Copyright) STUTTGART, Oct. 1.
There was disorder in a Stuttgart courtroom yesterday when the chief judge trying alleged leaders of the Baader-Meinhof anarchist group ruled that the trial would continue without the accused.
Andreas Baader denounced the judge as “a complete idiot,” and Ulrike Meinhof shouted: “You imperialist State pig.” They, and Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe, are on trial on charges of murder, bombing, and bank robbery.
Five doctors testified last week that, after three years in pre-trial custody, the defendants were not physically fit enough to endure prolonged criminal proceedings.
Chief Judge Theodor Prinzing, justifying the decision of the panel of five judges to continue the case in the absence of the accused, said that they had caused their own poor state of health by going on hunger strikes.
