Bomb blast in Kent
(N.Z.P. A.Reuter—Copyright) MAIDSTONE (Kent), September 26. A bomb blasted a public house bar used by soldiers in Maidstone last night, only seconds after the police had cleared the premises. Two policemen who were moving drinkers out of the Hare and Hounds, 40 miles south-east of London, were slightly injured by the explosion. The alarm had been raised by a soldier from a nearby barracks who saw a suspicious parcel outside the bar door. Police Superintendent Barry Pain commented angrily: “This was a completely inhuman act, and a deliberate attempt to maim. If the bar had not been cleared, there would have been many casualties.” A series of bomb attacks on public houses used by soldiers is believed to be the work of Irish Republican Army guerrillas bent on British withdrawal from Northern Ireland.
