Metreveli slated
(N .Z .P. A .Reuter—Copy right) MOSCOW. Soviet tennis players, including the top stars, Alex Metreveli and Olga Morozova, have been berated in the Communist Party newspaper, “Pravda,” for failing to match the power play of the Western world’s leading players. The article, written by two leading Soviet erainers said Soviet players had also failed to show “genuine athleticism”, and their training methods were far behind those used in the West.
Metreveli was specifically criticised for not developing an attacking style. “The strokes of the world’s top players have become stronger, but this cannot be said, for example, about Alexander Metreveli,” it said.
“It is necessary above all to put Soviet tennis on the path of genuine athleticism, reshaping on the basis of modern sports science the system of training top players in such a way that they should be equally good in all elements of play and possess imagination.”
