Tough boxing in final

Gene Peters, the I Crichton Cobbers star welter-weight, produced the finest form of his career when he defeated the Commonwealth Games bantam-weight bronze medallist, Robert Colley, by a unanimous points decision in the welter-weight final of the Canterbury Boxing Association’s senior championships at the Woolston Working Men’s club yesterday afternoon. Colley, a champion in any company, was shaken with several of Peters’s hard right crosses, and suffered the indigniity of a compulsory eight in the first round. Colley never seemed to recover from this, and Peters, a most compact and aggressive boxer, carried on to a deserved win over his illustrious opponent. COURAGEOUS Chris Adams, the gamest man seen in Canterbury rings for a decade, produced one of his characteristic courageous displays when he beat the young and impressive Wayne Benny (Woolston W.M.C.) in the middle-weight final. Adams was the inferior boxer in this fight, but his big heart and indomitable will to win carried the day for him and his trainer, the exchampion, Bernie Pope. , Two magnificent “infants,” Bryn Morgan (Irish Youth Club) and Gerry Tarrant (Timaru), provided three rounds of non-stop battling, which despite their lack of weight and punching power had the large crowd on their feet throughout. BLOODY NOSES

Both boys gave their utmost, and in spite of a bloody nose each, they kept the torrid pace up for the three rounds.

Morgan won on a split decision.

In the feather-weight final, Paul Morgan (Irish Youth Club) made short work of Roy Adams (New Brighton R.S.A.), knocking him out after two minutes of the first round.

Vai Karavasa, the good Wellington heavy-weight, carried too many guns for the promising, but inexperienced, Canterbury southpaw, Chris Naden.

The bout was a tame affair, Karavasa boxing well within himself.

Naden has promise, but like most big men has trouble finding opponents. In the light middle-weight final, Roy Peters, an excellent boxer-fighter, beat Mako Karavasa of Wellington.

Wayne Benny (W.W.M.C.) beat Paul Youngman (1.Y.C.); Chris Adams (N.8.R.5.A.) beat Luoai Lavea (Wellington); Roy Peters (Timaru) beat Tito Tultaupe (W.W.M.C); Brent Palmer (Linwood Boys Club) beat Steven Ross (W.W.M.C ); Paul Shatford (N.B.R S.A.) beat Karl Downie (Burwood); Kerry Tinkler (L.8.C.) beat Kevin Nichol (Crichton Cobbers Club); Trevor Palmer (L.8.C.) beat Clive Bishop (Burwood); Gary Skilton (W.W.M.C.) beat Robert Youngman (1.Y.C.).
