Buller beaten
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH.
Seldom showing the fire of previous games this season, Buller was decisively beaten, 17-9, by Canterbury B in a representative Rugby match on the heavy Victoria Square ground at Westport on Saturday. The conditions, with rain falling during the afternoon, made open football difficult. Canterbury owed its success to a heavier, taller and well-knit pack, which dominated all departments, especially the line-outs where G. J. Brown and J. S. Harwood excelled with clean twohanded takes.
The Canterbury B captain, J. J. Ryan, was always lively in the loose and J. A. Edmundson was also prominent in the Canterbury vanguard. M. D. Hall made a valuable contribution by outhooking J. Blair for most of the game.
The home pack worked hard but some showed signs of a lack of recent matches.
Bernie Stewart, formerly of Westport, scored a try and kicked a penalty goal against his old team. M. W. Gaukrodger and J. A. Edmundson also scored for Canterbury and P. Sheehan kicked a conversion.
Buller’s points came from penalty goals by the fullback, Gerald Hart, who has now scored 61 points in representative games this season.
Car racing.—Niki Lauda, of Austria, driving a Ferrari 312-T, won the pole position for the Grand Prix of Italy Formula One race with a record Imin 32.245ec circuit on the Monza track.
