TE MANIA BULLS AVERAGE $1067
Herd bull prices reached their strongest point of the season in the South Island at the annual sale of Angus cattle, offered on account of the Te Mania Stud, at Hundalee, on Thursday.
Thirty-nine rising two-year-old bulls returned the good average of $1067, compared with $597 for 48 sold last year.
In view of the generally low prices of commercial cattle during the last year, the increase was much larger than most followers of the market would have forecast. ’ Some estimates, made before the sale, forecast an average of $BOO or a little more.
The guaranteed beef schedule to operate as from October 1, and the recent marked improvement in the local market, probably had a good influence on the sale. Last year, in contrast, cattle prices at this time were on the wane, and the industry generally was affected by uncertainty.
In spite of the down-turn affecting farming during the last 12 months, the Te Mania sale showed there was renewed confidence in this part of the industry. A West Coast buyer ably summed up the sale, when he said: “It shows
there is still a bit of money about, which, of course, is a good thing.” The feature of the sale was the demand shown in the first run of 24 bulls. The average, to this stage, was almost $1330. The top price of the sale was $4lOO, bid by the Farmers’ Stud Stock Company (Palmerston North), for an Australian client. Four other bulls fetched $2OOO or more.
