$3.5m bid for islands
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) CANBERRA. Australia is negotiating to buy one of the world’s most remote coral atolls — the palm-clad Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean. Although sovereignty over the group of 27 islands is held by Australia, John Clunies-Ross, the present owner, inherited them from his ancestors who were granted the islands, 2768 kilometres west of Perth, by Queen Victoria in 1886. Australia’s first bid is reported to be $3.5m.
