Former reporter to go to Antarctic
Shipping News I
(By
ALAN KNOWLES)
An old newspaper col-i league, whom the writer! thought to be in Tonga, caused a surprise last week by turning up in Christchurch. He is Mr Neville Peat, who used to be shipping reporter of the “Evening Star” in Dunedin. He frequently called on the writer to help out with shipping stories — but that was some time ago. Mr Peat wrote the weekly shipping column in the “Evening Star” under the nom de plume “Pilot” — but it is not shipping that brings him to Christchurch. He has been appointed information officer in the Antarctic Division of the Department of Scientifiic and Industrial Research, and is in Christchurch to acquaint himself with the news media and the department before going to the Antarctic next month. Before his present appointment, Mr Peat was working as editorial adviser for a newspaper in Tonga, under the Volunteer Service Abroad scheme.
On the subject of shipping reporters the name of the regular shipping reporter of “The Press,” John Leslie, inadvertently appeared as the author of this column on Saturday, instead of that of the writer. Mr Leslie, of course, is on annual leave, and will not resume his daily column until September 30.
