Colonels’ final pleas

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ATHENS, Sept. 7.

Three colonels among 31 Greek Army officers and soldiers on trial for torturing political prisoners assumed full responsibility yesterday and said the other accused had acted on their orders.

The three, who served as commanders of the Special Investigation Branch of the Athens military police under Greece’s former military regime, were making final pleas in their trial before an Athens court martial. The 31 defendants face possible life imprisonment if found guilty. They are accused of employing torture to extract information from political prisoners about activities against the military regime, which collapsed in July, last year.

Retired Lieutenant- ’ Colonels Theodoros Theofyloyannakos, Nicholas Hatzizissis, and Anastassios Spanos said they alone were responsible for interrogation methods employed by the special branch.
