Northern Ireland
Sir, — Your editorial “Ulster: the fuse shortens” seems confused on the facts of the situation. The Provisional I.R.A. has been observing a truce since February and is not responsible for recent bombings in London, which are an attempt bv unknown people to destroy thei t-uce. You seem to assume, that all violence in Northern. Ireland is inspired by the 1.R.A., when on the contrary the vast majority of terrorist acts in recent months have been committed by Loyalist groups (like the U.D.A. and U.V.F.). Republicans still interned in Northern Irealand number 240, yet i Protestant groups openly threaten and commit atrocities such as the massacre of the Miami Show Band, and not one Loyalist is detained in Long Kesh. If the British want to stop the present violence they should not direct their attention toj the Republican movement, but to the open and selfconfessed Loyalist terrorists in Northern Ireland. — Yours, etc., G.W.T.
