Support for Tina's pronunciation
Support for TVl’s weather girl, Tina Carline, in her pronunciation of Maori place names, including Taupo, has come from a lecturer in Maori studies at Christchurch Teachers’ College (Mr Hone Taumaunu). “Tina is of course Maori, and does a good job,” said Mr Taumaunu. He said the correct pronunciation for Taupo was “Toe-paw” — with the first vowel sound “Toe” as in “go” and the second, “paw” as in the English word, “paw.” • Mr Taumaunu said the people who wrote letters to newspapers complaining about Tina’s pronunciation were just irritated because they did not hear the familiar “Teowpoe.” These people should find out about Maori pronunciation before they rush into print,” he said. The only fault he could find with Tina’s pronunciation was the way in which she sometimes said “Kaikoura.” At times she was inclined to use the pakeha version of “Kaik-oora” whereas it should be “Kaikoura” — with the “kour” as in “pour.”
