N.Z. oil spillage problem

(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 5. A major maritime accident might result in an oil spillage larger than New Zealand resources could at present contain, said the Minister for the Environment (Mrs TirikateneSullivan) today.

She had been asked by the Opposition spokesman on the environment, Mr V. S. Young (Egmont) if there was sufficient special equipment, dispersants, and pumps available and transportable, should there be a major oil spillage off New Zealand’s shores. Equipment was available at Auckland and Whangarei, and could be sent anywhere in New Zealand. “Further help could be available from overseas, and plans for this are being developed,” Mrs TirikateneSußivan said. Contingency plans for reporting, and dealing, with oil or condensate spillages at sea in connection with the Maui field or elsewhere were being developed, she said, and a training programme had been introduced for Ministry of Transport and other staff who would be involved in spillagecontrol work.
