Well - known ploughman dies
The death has occurred of Mr Kenneth Henry Boyle, of Broadfield, who was well known as a match ploughman in his earlier days and more recently has been active in administration and judging of ploughing. He was 65. Born at Fernside, Mr Boyle was aged 11 when his father bought the property at Broadfield where he lived until his death. For a number of years until his father’s death he farmed in partnership with his father, and after his mother’s death he farmed with a sister, Miss E. .1. Boyle, until about two years ago when his only son took over Miss Boyle’s interest in; the property. Hampshire, South Dorset Down and Southdown stud flocks were on the property, and Mr Boyle had a Southdown stud for many years. In his younger days Mr Boyie showed Clydesdale
| horses and ponies at local, agricultural and pastoral ’ association shows. Ploughing was one of his! I great interests and he started ploughing with I i horses in youth classes I ■ about 1926. Later, in open; [ company, he won prizes and trophies although these were ' the days when classes were very . big and competition ' was strong. It was nothing . to see 40 teams at the an- . nual Lincoln match with 1 shining harness and highly ■ decorated and groomed. ! Mr Boyle’s father was a • keen owner of Clydesdales > and made sure that his son ’ had a fine three-horse team 1 for local matches such as those at Lincoln and Court- : enay. When the matches resumed after the war, Mr’ ; Boyle gave much of his time; I to the administration of the; . Lincoln Ploughing Match! . Association and was known! for his conscientious work; (behind the scenes. He was one of those who devoted much effort to the I preparations for the world , ploughing match in the • Prebbleton-Broadfield district in 1967, which was ac- ■ claimed by overseas visitors ■ to be perhaps the best or-
fganised world final held to: that time. After retiring from match .(ploughing Mr Boyle was.ac-j : live as a judge and judged iiat many matches in Canter-1 : i bury, Marlborough and Nel-1 ilson. 1 Mr Boyle took a keen! ; interest in Federated Farm-!
