NO SKY SIGN IN SQUARE
A sky sign on top of the Oram Building, at the comer of Colombo and Armagh Streets, facing Victoria Square, would be inappropriate, said the Christchurch City Council town-planning committee members yesterday. The sign had been proposed by Claude Neon, Ltd. There is no sky sign in Victoria Square, apart from a small sign above the Western Building Society’s premises.
Councillors agreed that the sign could not become an integral part of the Oram building and would “downgrade” the character of such buildings as the Christchurch Town Hall. The committee also welcomed the interest of the Christchurch Civic Trust in the restriction of advertising signs in Christchurch. Advertising signs will be part of the City Council’s district scheme review proposals. Councillors said that trust members would have further opportunity to discuss the issue when the review was started.
