Summit Rd upkeep
The six councils involved in the upkeep of the Summit Road agreed yesterday that, because the road is of national significance as a tourist route, its upkeep should be paid for by the National Roads Board. : At a joint meeting, the councils decided to ask the [half-yearly meeting of the [No. 14 District Roads Council to have the road's status 'retained whereby the board ‘pays ail the maintenance [costs. The board has just told the councils that it will not meet the full maintenance cost, but will pay a subsidy of $3 for $l. Annual maintenance costs are about $13,000, but storm damage may add $5OOO to this year'figure. The councils affected are Christchurch City, Riccarton Borough, and the counties of Heathcote, Mount Herbert. Paparua, and Wairewa.
