Lake opened to sea
Lake Ellesmere has just 1 been opened to the sea foi the fifth time since April. 1 and for the seventh time in the last year. • Mr R. B. Johnson told the North Canterbury Catchment • Board yesterday that so far! as he knew, this was at record. The lake was opened on; Monday, and, still flowing yesterday, had dropped from 1,32 m to 0.95 m — about a foot. Mr Johnson said that: this followed an opening a; week earlier that ran for, four days, but did not lower ■ the lake level because of the high inflows of water.
