Street drainage
Sir, —Could the Drainage Board explain the purpose of the two manholes in Edgeware Road at the southern entrance to Dover Street, St Albans? I have looked through the “keyholes” of both manhole covers, and all I can see is asphalt. Therefore. 1 suspect the covers are just “dummies” and serve no useful purpose. I would like to know as an aid to identifying problems in heavy rain. During even light rain Dover Street becomes flooded while other streets around here are free of it. Knowing this particular case intimately I would say there is a blockage in the stormwater sewer pipe that runs under the footpath outside the flats at 8 Dover Street. Not just in the sump but in the pipe itself. It was unblocked about two months ago and the water got away. Now it is blocked again.—Yours, etc., DOVER STREET RATEPAYER. August 24, 1975. [Mr P. J. McWilliam. chief engineer, Christchurch Drainage Board, replies: “The two manholes in Edgeware Road opposite Dover Street provide entry for inspection and maintenance purposes to a 300 mm. diameter stormwater sewer and to a 375 mm. diameter sanitary sewer. The pipeline referred to by your correspondent has been checked and found to be clear.”]
