Where the money goes
The Ministry of; Works and Development is inviting the people of Christchurch to visit an exhibition showing how S4sm of their money will be spent this year. The exhibition, in the Building Centre at 211 Cashel Street, shows by: models, photographs, maps, and diagrams what the Ministry is doing in the Canterbury district, including the vast activity at Twizel A larse model of the Upper Waitaki power project is one of the main features of the exhibition. It enables people to take in at, a glance what exactly is entailed tn channelling water
from Lake Tekapo through a series of canals and other lakes down to Lake Benmore and in the process generating a further 800 megawatts of electricity. The Minister of Works; (Mr Connelly) opened the, exhibition yesterday, saying: that it would give people the chance to take in the full measure of the Minis- ! try's activities in the community. He said that as resources permitted, the 1200 miles of State highways in Canterbury would be extended and improved and during the next five years, 96 old bridges would be replaced. Many schools and other public buildings would have I to be designed and built while airports, lighthouses, i
defence bases, and penal institutions would have to be serviced and maintained. The Ministry hopes that many people will visit the exhibition, and that schools will visit it in groups.
