Residents of the east side of the Lower Styx Road. Brooklands. have had to put up with floodwater for two weeks because no authority will accept responsibility for fiumping- it a wav.
The area is in Waimairil County, but not tn the Christchurch Drainage! Board's district. The! Waimairi Count} Council says the board should' clear the water, and the board says that residents [ could, if they wished, petition the council to bring the land under the board’s control the board has plans, well I advanced, to improvedrainage in the Styx River to relieve pressure from the run-off from housing development at Marshland and Styx, but these deal only with thei river, and not with land I drainage in its lower reaches
Flooding in nearbs Harbour Road improved considerably yesterday as the Waimari County Council began pumping floodwaters into the Brooklands lagoon. It was- not known hou many| gallons had been pumped into the lagoon so far,' the Waimairi County Council’s deputy engin-| eer (Mr G W. Maim said; yesterday.
Mr Main said that thei pumps were working be-1 . low peak efficiency because of the distance beI tween the flooded areas and the lagoon. (Pumping in the Harbour Road area will continue todav.
