Operator, I've been cut off...

f.V Z Press Association) DANNEVIRKE. Aug. 28. Cheeky copper thieves last night chopped a 200yard section out of the main southern telephone toll line near Dannevirke. But apparently, they were disturbed and nearly a ton of wire neatly rolled was left beside the Na-pier-Wellington railway line where it passes through Dannevirke golf course.

Working under the cover of darkness earlylast evening, the thieves temporarily isolated Dannevirke from Palmerston North when they cut out 200 yards of overhead wires.

Post Office linemen were called out immediately when the toll circuits went dead, but it was not until about three hours and a half later that they found the gap and told the police.

Senior-Sergeant Alan Davey, of the Dannevirke police, said this morning that it was obvious that the thieves had been disturbed. They had carefully cut the wire off four poles

and had been in the process of cutting the wire of a fifth when they went, leaving behind SlOOO of copper wir emost of which was rolled ready for removal.
