Stop-work plan for meeting
The Canterbury Driv-i ers’ Union plans to! change its annual meeting from a single meeting in Christchurch to a series of stop-work; meetings throughout its! district.
A notice of motion given at! the union’s annual meeting on Wednesday night calls for (this change to the union rules, and for changes to make the executive more representative. The secretary (Mr P. R.j Liggett) said yesterday that! changes were an effort to make the union more democratic. Wednesday’s meeting was attended by 52 members from a total of more than 4000 in the Canterbury industrial district, which covers all| Canterbury province and the' Chatham Islands. From such a large area, it was no wonder that so few turned up to the annual meetings, Mr Liggett said. And as executive members usually came from Christchurch, there was little contact with such important places as Twiizel. It was now proposed that the executive include one representative for every 300 'members in about six areas, lyet to be defined. Nominations for the executive and any recommenda-
>tions for changes of rules or 'other matters could be called for at half-yearly stopwork meetings in February iand March. The annual meetling would consist of a number of stop-work meetings in 'July and August. It was hoped that all the necessary steps for changing the union rules would be completed by 1977. The union hoped to have all its members paid by their employers during the stopwork meetings, said Mr Liggett.
