Secretin set for title

The manner in which Mie i French champion, Jacques Sec* I retin, disposed of the twice l national champion and sev- • enth seed, Bryan Foster (Otago), in the quarter-finals of the men's singles at the national table tennis championships in Cowles Stadium last evening left no doubt as to who would win the title. Against the deceptive spin and the incredible control of Secretin, Foster was never in the match. The final tonight will at least consist of one Frenchman and one New Zealander. The top jseed and defending champion,; ■ Richard Lee (Auckland) will playi i James Morris (Northland) in one; semi-final, and Secretin will be; opposed by his wily 38-vear-old countryman, Vincent Purkhart, i ■ in the other match. Lee was in danger of being eliminated in the fifth round when he dropped the first two; games to the Franklin left-! i hander. Robert Blair, but he proved his champion qualities b.\ making no issue of the next three games. Morris, the 22-year-old New Zealand representative con-! ■ trolled the over-the-table play against Maurice Burrowes (Canterbury) to win in straight games in the quarter-finals. Secretin and Yveline Leclere, gained their ex-i pected win against Wiiyne Adamson (Franklin) and Ann Stone-’ street (Auckland). Adamson and Stonestreet, the fifth seeds, did extremely well to, progress so far. They eliminated the top «eeds and title-holders.; Lee and Kathy Fraser, in an ex-1 citing quarter-final. It was anj exciting contest. The women’s final will be an all F”ench affair. Miss Szalka was outplayed by the present Cham-

The eighth-seeded New Zealand pair proved a powerful combination, eliminating the champions, Lee and Morris, in the quarter-finals, and the fifth seeds, Bob and Graham Lassen (Auckland) in the semi-finals.
