Mall amusements

Sir, — I would be interested to read the comment of a representative of the shop-owners of Barrington Mall as to where the stream of amusements within the mall complex will end? I used to enjoy the convenience of shopping there, but the first moment of discomfort for my well-ordered routine was the appearance of a see-saw and slide, both of which have become increasingly unstable. But last week I was further dismayed to find an aeroplane ride machine costing 20c, a very brief turn. Since a two-year-old cannot be expected to understand the pure exploitation of such devices, what could be a pleasant shopping trip develops into a battle of wills. Why not keep such amusements for parks or fairs where they can be avoided if so desired? — Yours etc., BEVERLEY H. MANSON. August 19, 1975.

[Mr A. F. Price, manager of the Barrington Park Mall, replies: “Barrington Park Mall has had many requests from customers that we provide amusements within the mall complex similar to those provided in other shopping complexes. We believe that we have offered customers free amusements for young and old alike, but, unfortunately, it is only by allowing amusement operators into the complex that shopping centres can offer these attractions, Such things as aeroplane rides at 20c a ride include a high wage content and the cost of the equipment also has to be allowed for. We try to please all our customers with a variety of promotions but .obviously we cannot please everyone.”]
