Leilani under sedation
(N Z Press Assn — Copyright) ’ MELBOURNE, j The New Zealand-bred mare. Leilani. is seriously hurt and was under sedation at Bart Cummings’s stables at Flemington yesterday. The mare fell while being loaded aboard a Melbournebound plane in Sydney on Monday. She fractured two dorsal spines on her backbone near her withers, and crushed a third. Cummings's brother, Pat, said it would be at least four weeks before they would have any idea of how she was doing. However, it was almost certain that Leilani would not race again this spring. Because Leilani never does; well when put out to pasture,; she will be kept in the stables for her rest. The lessees of Leilani, Messis Andrew Peacock, and lan Rice, had planned to restrict the mare to weight-for-age races this season.
Their lease expires in July next year, when the mare will return to New Zealand for breeding.
