N.Z. goal - shooters in good form at world champs

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND.

The New Zealand goal-shooters, Frances Granger and Beth Carnie, were in devastating form against Wales in the fourth world netball series at the Windmill Road courts in Auckland yesterday.

New Zealand had no trouble against Wales, coasting to an 88-16 win after leading 53-4 at half-time.

Continuing their fine performances, Carnie scored 51 points and Granger 37. Trindad and Tobago, equal fourth at the last inernational, arrived at this series determined to improve that position. Today they came very close to taking the first step toward their ambition when they failed by only three goals to defeat England. The girls from the Caribbean have never been further back than fifth in the

world tournaments. In the last series, held in 1971, they shared their equal fourth place with Jamaica. After today’s 37-39 loss to England in a torrid match, Trinidad and Tobago have one last chance to upset one of the big three when they meet New Zealand on Friday. Australia withstood the challenge in a fiery match on Monday. In the other feature match of the day, between Northern Ireland and Singapore, the slightly more experienced Irish won 36-20, to gain their first win and points. Australia gave what their coach, Mrs Joyce Brown, regarded as a disappointing

performance to win, 65-24, against Scotland.

Jamaica, 18-11 ahead at half-time, pulled away from Papua New Guinea in the second half to win, 52-24. But the match was the best effort of the Papua New Guinea girls so far. They took advantage of an injured Janet Johnson at goal attack to hold the score to 9-5 in the the first quarter. In the second quarter, Miss Johnson was replaced by Marlene Moodie with Joy Charles going in to Miss Moodie’s wing attack spot. But the Jamaicans took time to settle.

The Trinidad and Tobago girls’ match against England rivalled their earlier match against Australia which they lost, 45-37. There was the inevitable contact, but it is part of the acrobatic style of play of the Caribbeans. It was noticeable that their leaps for the ball were generally more controlled, than when they played Australia.

It was surprising that Christine Maylor was not used in the England team, but Mrs Mary French, the English coach, obviously throught that she was not fiery enough against the Caribbean girls. The top scorer for England was Judi Heath, who scored, 36 of the English goals.

Northern Ireland 34 (V. Lyttle 24, A. Mclvor 12), beat Singapore 20 (O. Kay 16, S. Heng 4). Jamaica 52 (M. Moodie 31, S. Sewell 13, J. Johnson 8), beat Papua New Guinea 34 (M. Poro 14. C. Hard 10).

New Zealand 88 (F. Granger 37, B. Carnie 51) beat Wales 14 (C. Lewis 4, L. Owen 12).

England 39 (J. Heath 36, P. Cane 3) beat Trinidad and Tobago 37 (J. Pierre 24, C. Charles

Australia 45 (M. Goll an 31, S. Hayes 34) beat Scotland 34 (J. Elliot 15, J. Hughes 9). How they stand: —
