’Corkage' to be limited

The Government has moved to stop non-Hcensed restaurants, who permit patrons to take in a bottle of wine, from charging their customers “corkage” fees.
This custom, w’hich sprang jup in the days when there ! were few licensed restau- ■ rants, is officially recognised 'Tn the Sale of Liquor ■ Amendement (No. 2) Bill inI troduced in Parliament. Unlicensed restaurants, which want to allow their ■ patrons to bring in a bottle i of wine, must apply to their I local licensing committee for la permit to do so. The permit is to be issued ; subject to the restaura- ' teur’s not charging a corkage or other fee relating to I the liquor. The liquor must 'be consumed by the people i during their meal, and all bottles and glasses must be (removed at 10.30 p.m. ! People under 18 may con- ' sume liquor in such a restaurant only if accompanied by a spouse or parent.
