Repeal of media act proposed

The act prohibiting overseas control of New Zealand new spapers will be repealed under provisions of the Commerce Bill introduced in Parliament yesterday, the Press Association reports. The News, I.td, group of Adelaide, headed by Mr Rupert Murdoch, bought a considerable number of shares on the open market. The Holyoake Government Introduced legislation to prevent any overseas interest acquiring control of news media in New Zealand.

A controversy surrounded the move and subsequently the Labour Party promised to repeal the legislation If It came to power.

The Attorney-General (Dr Finlay) said yesterday that the News Media Ownership Repeal Bill, introduced some time ago and now number 23 on the Order Paper, would lapse.
