Gas-rig bomb scare over
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GREAT YARMOUTH, August 27, Royal Navy divers declared an end to an expensive bomb hoax when they returned to shore last night after completing a search of three North Sea gas-drilling rigs without finding explosives. The American Phillips Petroleum Company, which evacuated its three rigs, said it had suffered a substantial financial loss because of the false alarm, although production losses had been minimal. A telephone caller warned the company and two British newspapers that explosives had been planted beneath the rigs. • , A Phillips spokesman said last night that the company intended to have talks with the Defence Department and Department of Energy to improve security.
