Johannesburg complaint
(N.Z.P A.-Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, August 27. Residents of a Johannesburg white suburb have lodged a complaint with the local branch of the National Party about the number of blacks in their area. They say that the siting of factories near the Elandsfontein area of the city is “giving blacks an excuse to walk through white suburbs." White shift-workers were afraid to leave their wives and children alone at night, one delegate told the Transvaal National Party congress yesterday. The Minister for Planning (Mr Jan Loots) told the delegates that he would do his best to keep future industrial developments away from white residential areas. Under South Africa’s apartheid laws, blacks live in their own townships and are not permitted to enter white areas without special passes.
