Boy safe after explosion
(N.Z. Press Association) GISBORNE, Aug. 27. A 15-year-old Wairoa College pupiL Stephen Cowan, is recovering well in Wairoa Hospital after being blasted from his father’s 16-ft boat in rough seas off Mahia Peninsula on Monday afternoon. He had to swim for almost an hour before being picked up by a passing fishing boat skippered by Mr M. Clayton of Mahia. Mr J. J. Cowan said that his son had been swept away quickly in the rough seas, and he had been lucky to get picked up by the neighbouring boat. The explosion occurred about 2| miles off-shore when a sparking generatoi had apparently ignited fuel which had leaked into the bilges.
Mr Cowan managed to get the boat safely ashore.
