Nottingham stream petition
Thirty-six Halswell residents have sent a petition to the Halswell Communitv ICouncil asking that urgent [attention be given to the Nottingham Stream. i The petition said that in creased subdivisions in the area had produced more storm-water discharge into the stream, creating flooding The stream was also over'grown. Cr K. H Richards said that since control of the [stream had passed to the ‘Christchurch Drainage Board from the North Canterbury Catchment Board, there had [been a deterioration in mam jtenance. 1 The problem in the Not [tingham Stream was a direct result of the level of Lake Ellesmere, and the ability ot the Halswell Stream to dis charge into it, the council chairman (Cr J Y. Pthig). said. The Nottingham Stream fed into the Halswell Rivet chairman (Cr J. Y. Pcthig). required to open Lake Ellesmere to the sea when its level reached 3.5 ft. It had been done six times this year, Cr Pethig said. The Catchment Board "aWhen the discharge of the Halswell River into Lake Ellesmere was obstructed the Nottingham Stream backed up. The residents said that silt from subdivision work, and rubbish, had blocked the stream. The council decided to ask the Paparua County Council to redirect the petition to the Christchurch Drainage Board
