Gale costs of $5800
It cost the Paparua County Council $3156 for the use of its own staff and plant in clearing blocked roads after the gale on August 1, and so far contractors who helped have put in bills totalling $2707. The County Engineer (Mr J D. Annan) told a meeting of the council’s rural district committee on Monday that 25 roads had been blocked, in some cases by isolated trees, in others by hundreds of trees.
He said the council clearance had made the roads usable and safe, and that it was not proposed to do any more work. In many instances, no effort had been made by tree-owners to clear the remains.
