Israelis’ views of Arab aims

(N.Z.P.A.Reuter—Copyright) • TEL AVIV, August 26. Four out of five Israelis believe that the Arabs’ longterm goal is to exterminate them, according to an opinion poll published in Tel Aviv yesterday, as the United States Secretary of State (Dr Henry Kissinger) flew to Egypt for the second time in his latest peace mission. The poll, drawn up by the Institute for Applied Sociology at Jerusalem University last month, was shown to Dr Kissinger last night. It found that 79 per cent of Israelis thought Egypt would attack Israel within five years of any new agreement and as many believed Egypt would not keep to the agreement’s terms. Just over half (56 per cent) of those interviewed said that the return of occupied Arab land had nothing to do with real peace talks, and the same proportion felt that Israel must retain some of Sinai.

A majority (59 per cent) felt the Government had been “handling things satisfactorily since the (1973) Yom Kippur war.”
